Does Economic Recession Spell SEO Meltdown?
With all this talk of the American economy dwindling in the balance, I couldn’t help but ask this question. The wheels look well and truly set to come off of the American bandwagon, with elections looming and a result either way evident to create some degree of separation adn division in American society, it worries me how this will effect the SEO industry.
SEO, affiliate marketing, arbitrage, whatever your niche, a lot of it has originated from the American capitalist economy, set up to reward the daring and the brave, the innovative and the skilful. The trouble that I can see is that all of these innovations and skills and the success of applying them always relates back to the success of different industries and the success of the economy.
At this stage it is ofcourse really to early to say, but to my mind there is a lot of trepidation building in many industries and work places. Look at the recent redundancies at Yahoo for example, also the general state of stock markets and pension funds across the world.
Over here in the UK, we are somewhat sheltered from the immediate fall out, but as always the UK is usually lagging behind the USA in one way or another. This is not to say I don’t think we will be effected, I am sure that some down turns in industry, demand and potentially sales revenues will occur in the UK, its probably just that we have a slightly more stable debt borrowing ratio at the moment. Slightly being the opperative word here!! Fuel prices still cause a problem though, we currently pay £1.06 pence per liter. Thats $2.5 dollars per liter. I can only imagine to outrage if US citizens were faced with this price.
I am not trying to be a doom monger. I think that a recession is ultimatly just an economies way of balancing its self out. I guess there are two possible outcomes, either the SEO industry will innovate and survive or many seo firms, affiliate marketers and arbitrate folk will just simply no longer be able to survive.
